Kahit may pandemya, patuloy pa rin ang wildlife conservation – Cimatu

Kahit na may pandemya ng COVID-19 sa bansa ay patuloy pa rin ang preserbasyon ng wildlife, ito ang sinabi ni Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu matapos makakita ng nesting ng sea turtle o pawikan sa probinsiya ng Zambales.

“Even if we are faced with a difficult situation brought about by the threats of the disease, we must continue to strive to protect and preserve our endangered pawikan,” sabi ni Cimatu at idinagdag pa nito na ang pagkakakita sa nesting ay nagpapatunay na may bunga ang pagsisikap ng ahensya.

Ayon kay Cimatu, ang insidenteng ito ay paraan upang lalo pang mahikayat ang Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) na gawin ang kanilang tungkulin upang maprotektahan ang kapaligiran.

Sa ulat ng DENR’s Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) ng Olongapo City, nakita ang pangingitlog ng sea turtle sa Aplaya Caarusipan Beach Resort sa San Antonio noong Nobyembre 28.

Agad namang nagpadala ng grupo ang CENRO sa lugar upang magsagawa ng monitoring at inspeksiyon.

Sa kanilang isinagawang inspeksiyon, napag-alaman na ang pawikan ay ang tinatawag na olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) na itinituring na endangered species base na rin sa DENR Administrative Order 2019-09 o ang Updated National List of Threatened Philippine Fauna and their Categories.

Ayon naman kay Olongapo City’s CENR Officer Roger Encarnacion, ang nesting site na nasa harapan ng beach resort ay ligtas sa pagtaas ng tubig.

“Thankfully, we do not need to relocate the nest to a safer place. But as a precautionary measure, we placed multiple fences made from nets to protect the eggs from possible predators,” sabi pa ni Encarnacion.

Sinabi pa ni Encarnacion, ang kanilang grupo ay regular na magmo-monitor sa mga itlog ng pawikan upang maprotektahan ito sa mga poachers at illegal wildlife traders. Magsasagawa rin ng lingguhang information and education campaign (IEC) ang CENRO at seminar sa local government unit staff at resort employees. ### (Strategic Communication and Initiatives Service (SCIS)
