Boracay Water wins in DOE’s 2023 Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards

Manila Water, through its Non-East Zone subsidiary Boracay Water, proudly secures its second accolade for Energy Efficiency, winning at the 2023 Energy Efficiency Excellence Awards (EEE) from the Department of Energy (DOE).

Demonstrating outstanding commitment to responsible energy use and sustainability, Boracay Water earns the prestigious title in the Special Awards in Energy Efficiency Excellence category, specifically under the Energy Efficiency Projects Implemented and Other Best Practices subcategory.

This accolade serves as a testament to Manila Water’s unwavering dedication to sustainability practices. The DOE EEE Award, an annual recognition program, acknowledges companies, projects, government sectors, and individuals for their exemplary best practices in energy efficiency. Notably, this achievement marks a historic milestone for Manila Water as it clinches its very first award in this prestigious category.

Through its Energy Policy, Boracay Water successfully implemented several operational efficiency measures, leading to a notable improvement in the energy use index in 2018-2022 of 0.54kWh/cu.m to 0.44kWh/cu.m, and substantial energy savings of 1.4million kWh in 3 years equivalent to a cost avoidance of USD 248,214 or Php 13.9million. The business units’ average annual savings is at 467,092 kWh/yr equivalent to 17% reduction from the baseline energy consumption while the average annual cost avoidance is at USD 82,679 or Php 4.63 million/yr equivalent to 19% of the baseline energy cost.

Among Boracay Water’s energy efficiency initiatives are the management of the Manoc-Manoc reservoir water level, adjustment of Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) frequency settings, water supply diversion for reduced energy consumption, and optimization of its pumping station operations.

Adrian Bryan Magallanes, Boracay Water General Manager, shares his perspective on this significant recognition: “While much can still be done on energy efficiency and sustainability, this award is a validation that we are on the right track. We will continue our aggressive drive to pursue responsible energy use and sustainability”.

Melvin John Tan, Chief Operating Officer for Non-East Zone Philippines at Manila Water, reinforces the Company’s commitment: “Sustainability is a shared responsibility, and at Manila Water, our journey begins with Energy Efficiency as the initial step toward achieving Net Zero. Each of us holds the power to make a difference and create a positive impact. Rest assured, Manila Water’s commitment extends beyond delivering clean water – we do so with utmost care and compassion.”

“This achievement highlights the exceptional nature of TIEZA collaboration with Manila Water in Boracay. Through Manila Water’s world-class, energy-efficient operations and extensive experience, we are able to provide significant benefits to our customers and contribute positively to environmental initiatives.” shares Mark T. Lapid, Chief Operating Officer, TIEZA.

Manila Water continues to set the standard for excellence in the energy efficiency landscape, with this latest recognition highlighting the company’s dedication to creating a positive impact on both environmental and community fronts. Earlier this year, Manila Water also won an Energy Efficiency Award from the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP).#
