Calamities and other emergencies occur more frequently nowadays as a consequence of the natural disturbances brought about by modern and advanced way of life. As such, people and the environment are at the mercy of typhoon and flooding occurences.
Prepared for all eventualities, the Industrial Technology Development Institute’s (DOST-ITDI) packaging technology experts have developed Ready-to-Eat (RTE) sweet potato (camote) and cassava cubes in syrup that can be eaten by victims outright with no need for cooking or any preparation.
The RTE sweet potato and cassava can be eaten without using utensils in its easy-open packaging design. The food products are applied with high barrier and retort pouch packaging technology to extend product shelf-life to more than one year at ambient condition.
The food products are suitable for disaster/relief purposes. It has met DSWD’s shelf-life requirement of more than six months. Products can be consumed by anyone regardless of age, sex, culture and religion.
Aside from being a relief food, these RTE food products can be produced and sold in the market as snack food, side dish, and additional ingredient to recipes like salad, sweet preserves, and other food preparations.
The Ready-to-Eat Sweet Potato and Cassava Cubes is one of 21 ITDI-developed technologies selected to be featured in Cluster 7 – Resilience and Innovation of the 2019 National S&T Week (NSTW) Exhibits slated on July 17-21, 2019 at the World Trade Center-Metro Manila. Admission to the exhibits is FREE. It is open to the public from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
