QC BARANGAYS URGED TO ENCOURAGE BIKING

Bicycles will soon be the light transport utility of choice in Quezon City, most especially in the barangays.

The Quezon City Council has approved a resolution urging all the 142 to install bike racks in their respective barangay halls or in any other convenient place that can be utilized as bike parking.

Under City Council Resolution SP 6760, bikes are recognized for being very useful to the human society, “both in cultural and industrial realms.”

Councilor Allan B. Reyes, the main proponent of the resolution, noted that there is a move in QC to establish a scheme known as bicycle sharing system or community bicycle program which is implemented in some cities around the world.

Reyes said encouraging residents to use bikes as their mode of transportation will complement the public transport system and will offer an alternative to motorized traffic that will reduce congestion and pollution.

“Biking is cost-effective, healthy and convenient to the users,” Reyes said in the resolution.

The Quezon City government led by Mayor Herbert M. Bautista is supportive of the moves to protect the environment by providing measures and initiatives such as creation of bike lanes to encourage residents to utilize bike instead of motorized vehicles that cause air pollution. # (ARES P.
