QC MULLS TEACHING CLIMATE CHANGE IN PRIMARY, SECONDARY SCHOOLS

A Quezon City Councilor has urged the Department of Education (DepEd) to require the mandatory teaching of climate change and global warming in the primary and secondary schools.

Third district Councilor Gian Carlo Sotto said that recent news reports revealed that schools around the country and throughout Southeast Asia have started preparations for  teaching climate change and global warming to their students.

Sotto said the proposal for QC is not only timely but also vital as the Philippines is one of the five countries identified as among the most vulnerable to climate change due to its archipelagic nature and geography.

The subject can be called Environmental Studies and be incorporated into certain subjects or presented as a separate subject and become part of the curriculum itself.

Sotto believed that children should be taught the issues on climate change and global warming so they can learn the importance of protecting and saving their environment.

He said that these children are the future of the country and should know at an early age how to protect the environment for their future and the next generations. Divine/ Maureen Quiñones, PAISO
