New boat engineering material, energy audit in 2019 ITDI-NSTW

New boat engineering material

The Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) is joining more than 20 DOST line agencies in celebrating the annual National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) exhibition of its innovated technologies to be held on July 17-21, 2019 at the World Trade Center-Metro Manila, Pasay City.

Themed as “Science for the People: Enabling Technologies for Sustainable Development,” this year’s event puts on display recently developed technologies and products.

Results of intensive and exhaustive research and development (R&D) efforts of ITDI, two of these are abaca fiber-reinforced composite for boats and energy audit survey and analysis for energy conservation in buildings.

The former uses the abundant Manila Hemp or abaca and polymeric resin as composite material.

Commercially available boats are made from rubber and can cost more than a million pesos. Other units are made from fiberglass, which poses health hazards.

ITDI’s technology is a low-cost, healthier, and environmentally sustainable alternative for industrial applications. Further, the unit is lightweight, has good insulation, corrosion-resistant, durable, and easy to repair and maintain.

The second technology that ITDI will feature in the week-long exhibit, energy audit survey, is a critical examination of an energy-consuming facility, system, or equipment.

Its use find various applications such as setting energy conservation goals; identifying areas where energy wastes can occur; relating energy consumption to production; improving process and equipment efficiencies; and identifying and recommending energy-saving opportunities.

Firms interested in availing themselves of the energy audit/ assessment or training services can expect to be coached on how to collect energy consumption and equipment performance data; analysis of energy audit data; evaluation of opportunities and recommendations; and energy audit report preparation.

The Abaca Fiber-Reinforced Composite for Boats, and Energy Audit Survey and Analysis for Energy Conservation in Buildings are two of 21 ITDI-developed technologies selected to be featured in Cluster 1 – Food Security, Energy, and Environment of the 2019 National S&T Week (NSTW) Exhibits slated on July 17-21, 2019 at the World Trade Center-Metro Manila. Admission to the exhibits is FREE. It is open to the public from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

NSTW is celebrated every third week of July through Proclamation No. 169 of 1993 to highlight significant contributions of S&T to national development. (AMGuevarra\\ ITDI S&T Media Service)
