QC URGES PUBLIC OFFICIALS TO USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT

The Quezon City Council has unanimously approved a resolution urging all public officials to take public transport at least once a month.

Resolution No. SP-6311, S-2015, authored by 2nd District Councilor Ramon P. Medalla, encourages all government officials to take the challenge of using public transportation to experience the sentiments of commuters especially employees who most of the time have to bear with all the difficulties as they go to work everyday.

The resolution states that government officials should try to understand the plight of commuters by riding in public transportation at least once a month.

According to Councilor Medalla, taking the chance to experience the hardship of riding public transport may serve as an eye opener to public officials, most especially those who ride comfortably everyday in their air-conditioned vehicles provided by government.

The riding public have to endure exposure to air pollution, time-consuming queues in public transport stations, jam-packed trains, picky taxi drivers and fare hikes due to fluctuating oil prices, Medalla added.

In an online petition addressed to President Benigno Aquino III, public officials are urged to commute at least once a month for them to personally experience commuters’ concerns and come up with viable and urgent solutions to commuters’ problems.

Senator Grace Poe, Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte and Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya recently took the challenge to travel using the rail transit. (Maureen Quinones)
