LA LOMA READY FOR LECHON PARADE, FESTIVAL

Quezon City residents will witness another colorful parade of roasted pigs, or lechon, dressed in costumes on especially designed floats on May 17 in the country’s Lechon Capital –  La Loma.

Mayor Herbert Bautista, Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte, Congressman Francisco Calalay  and the La Loma Lechoneros Association, Inc will lead city residents in the celebration of Quezon City ’s Lechon Festival next month.

City residents and others cities, as well as government and non-government associations and companies, are urged to join the annual lechon parade where big cash prizes await the winning entries. Thirty thousand pesos (Php30,000) will be given away as first prize, twenty thousand pesos (Php20,000) for  second prize and ten thousand pesos  (Php10,000) for third prize.

To join the contest, a participating individual or group should buy one whole lechon in any of the member establishments of the La Loma Lechoneros, where it will be dressed in their chosen theme or design.

Aside from the lechon parade, the city’s tourism department bared that a culinary contest for amateur chefs, where they will use a 0.5 kilo of lechon as main ingredient in their entry dish, to highlight the event.

The parade along a 2-kilometer route will kick off at Calavite Street, which is home to some of the country’s famous lechon makers, like Pingping’s Lechon, Mila’s and Lydia’s Lechon, to name a few.

The lechon festival, which is one of the highlights of the city’s Diamond Jubilee celebration, is part of the city government’s vigorous effort to transform the La Loma area into a major tourism attraction.

Barangay Paang Bundok chairman and La Loma Lechoneros Association, Inc president Willie Manugar Chua said that other major shows in the La Loma Lechon festival are a street dancing competition, lion-dragon dance exhibition, boodle fight, grand fireworks display and the grand procession of the Nuestra Señora del Salvacion.

Other barangays that will participate in the lechon festival are Barangay Salvacion, Lourdes , San Isidro Labrador and N.S. Amoranto.(Maureen Quiñones, PAISO)
