QC EVACUATES 200 FAMILIES AT BAGONG SILANGAN

The Quezon City government, on orders of Mayor Herbert Bautista, has evacuated at least 200 families at Barangay Bagong Silangan, whose houses were submerged in neck-deep water brought about by rampaging floodwaters as a result of the swelling of the Marikina River on Tuesday during the onslaught of typhoon “Pedring.”

The families, most of which were also stricken by typhoon “Ondoy” two years ago, were brought at the nearby Bagong Silangan Elementary School as well as the barangay covered court and at the roof top of the barangay hall where they were provided food assistance by the QC social services development department.

QC is also preparing to evacuate 300 more families at Barangay Bagong Silangan to safer grounds as flood waters continue to rise especially along the areas of Tumana, Clemencia, Greenland and Comia, Mayor Bautista said.

Already, three rubber boats have been dispatched at Barangay Bagong Silangan to provide rescue operations to the affected families.

Meanwhile, the QC government has dispatched 100 garbage trucks for the city’s clearing operation.

Mayor Bautista directed the QC environmental protection waste management department, parks development administration department and the engineering department to oversee the clearing operation, subject of which were the trees uprooted as a result of the strong winds brought about by “Pedring.”

In its report to the Mayor, the department of public order and safety reported said at least 50 fallen and uprooted trees were reported during the onslaught of “Pedring” in Quezon City.  Majority of cases of fallen trees has been reported in the Fairview area.

QC braced for “Pedring” by placing on high alert status the QC disaster risk reduction management council in an effort to minimize the loss of lives and properties during the onslaught of the typhoon. Precy/ Ramir/ Maureen Quiñones, PAISO
