Los Baños Declares National Wood Collection a Cultural Treasure

The Los Baños Municipal Council has officially declared the Xylarium wood collection of the Department of Science and Technology – Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) a Cultural Treasure, cementing its status as a landmark of science, heritage, and tourism.

The designation was formalized through Resolution No. 2025-180, passed on October 20, 2025. The resolution, authored by Councilor Muriel B. Dizon, acknowledges the collection’s invaluable role and directs its inclusion in the municipality’s official tourism promotions.

The DOST-FPRDI Xylarium, often called a “Wood Library,” houses thousands of wood specimens representing approximately 98% of known Philippine tree species. The collection includes samples from extinct species and specimens dating back to the 1900s, making it an indispensable scientific and historical resource.

In statements, officials hailed the recognition. DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum, Jr. stated it “strengthens the value of DOST-FPRDI’s wood specimens and also highlights the Filipino spirit of innovation and care for the environment.” Los Baños Mayor Neil Andrew N. Nocon expressed pride that the collection “bridges nature, science and culture.”

For researchers, the Xylarium serves as a critical reference for taxonomy, climate studies, and forest restoration. It also provides insights for anthropologists studying traditional knowledge and for industries seeking to understand authentic Filipino craftsmanship.

DOST-FPRDI Director Rico J. Cabangon emphasized the collection’s role in safeguarding knowledge for future generations. He announced that plans are underway to enhance public access through guided tours, educational exhibits, and digital archives.#
