DENR cites eight ‘Best Murals’ by Diliman Creek barangays

Brgy. Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City bagged the top prize in the recently concluded Mural Painting Contest for barangays of Diliman Creek and its tributaries organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

The barangay brought home Php30,000 for their mural which effectively illustrated the theme,  “Sama-sama Tayo Tungo sa Malinis na Katubigan at Luntiang Kapaligiran.”

Two other barangays won major prizes namely, Brgy. E. Rodriguez for 2nd prize (Php20,000) and Brgy. Paligsahan for 3rd prize (Php 10,000).

Five consolation prizes of Php2,000 each were also given to barangays Qurino 2C, Pansol, Kristong Hari, San Martin de Porres and Masagana, all in Quezon City.

In an awarding ceremony held recently at the Bulwagang Ninoy at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center in Quezon City, singer Noel Cabangon, the Clean Rivers Ambassador and chair of the contest’s Board of Judges, handed over the cash prizes to the winning barangays, together with Myrna Jimenez of Sagip Ilog Pilipinas Movement, Louie Sarmiento, president of Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association (PMSEA) and Patrick Negrete of Pacific Paint (Boysen) Phils. PMSEA donated the cash prizes to the contest.

The competition was an offshoot of the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for the “Save the Diliman Creek” Program launched during the Earth Day Celebration at SM Megamall last April 18, 2011. Among the partners for the said program were the DENR, Quezon City Local Government, PMSEA and Sagip Ilog Pilipinas Movement. The 33 local officials of barangays traversing the creek served as witnesses to the signing of the agreement and showed their support by initiating orchestrated clean-ups of creeks within their area every fourth Sunday of each month.

A total of 17 barangays joined the mural painting contest, which ran from June 1-19, 2011 as part of the Environment Mont celebration. PAO, DENR
