PUP CUM LAUDE IS THE FIRST LADY PRESIDENT OF NATIONAL PRESS CLUB

2022 National Press Club Elected President Lydia Bendaña Bueno

For the first time in the history of a strong and longest running National media organization, the National Press Club have a lady President.

In May 1, 2022 during its General Assembly and Election, the National Press Club of the Philippines (NPC) elected the first ever woman President in the person of Lydia Bueno, a 3-decade Remate employee but now Editor of said tabloid newspaper.

Lydia Bueno was the Club’s Secretary before the election. Aside from being one of the officers and editor, Bueno is also active in her philantropic activity as a Lion. She was the Past President of Pasay City Host Lions Club in CY 2019-2020 and 2020-2021. She did not stop as a Lion, in fact she is active in different positions such as Pasay City Host Lions Club Marketing and Communications Chairperson (2022-2023) and Lions Clubs International District 301-A2 Cabinet Secretary (2021-2022).

Moreover, Lydia Bendaña Bueno is scholarly excellent. She was a Valedictorian of Guyong Elementary School and Philippine National Agricultural School in 1985 and 1989, respectively. A Cum Laude of Polytechnic University of the Philippines Mass Communication Major in Journalism in 1993.

The relentless efforts of Bueno, be in ideas or in action was never put in vain. She together with other officers of NPC has made strong positive reforms of the Club. Only with the Press Freedom Party has transformed NPC into credible and with integrity media organization.

NPC active members are aware of huge liabilities which was left by former leadership prior to assumption as President of Press Freedom leader Benny Antiporda. After Antiporda, a Batangueno Paul Gutierrez continue the vision of Press Freedom Party…. to lift up NPC in all aspect, financially, morally and physically.

NPC Past President, now Secretary

NPC was registered as a non-stock, non-profit organization before the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 1952, its By-Laws was amended.

During the term of Paul Gutierrez, two major amendments was approved by the general membership. One, the NPC is opening its doors to local, provincial and regional media organizations in the country for them to become recognized NPC “affiliates,” provided they comply with some membership requirements and two, strengthen the Club’s “oversight committee” to review the policies and decisions taken by the NPC Board.

According to NPC Secretary Gutierrez, “the strengthening of the oversight committee, henceforth to be known as the ‘Council of Advisers’ (The Council) is to prevent a repeat of the Club’s previous experience under unscrupulous leaders whose decisions proved inimical to the interest of the Club in particular and the credibility and integrity of the media profession in the country in general.”

2022 NPC Elected Officers: (L-R Upper row) Board of Directors Jeany Lacorte, Aya Yupangco, Bobby Ricohermoso, Jun’ Mendoza, Joe Torres, Nats Taboy (L-R middle row) Treasurer Mina Navarro, Board of Director Madz Domiquez, Vice President Kristina Maralit, President Lydia Bueno, Secretary Paul Gutierrez, Auditor Nats Taboy, Board of Director Jean Fernando and (Center) Alvin Murcia

2022 NPC Election Committee are lifetime members, Al Pedroche (chairman), Catalino ‘Jun’ Alano (vice chairman) and Ernesto ‘Estong’ Reyes (member).

Another lady officer is Kristina Maralit of Manila Times as Vice President. Re-elected to their posts are Club treasurer Mina Navarro of Abante and Leonel ‘Boying’ Abasola of Balita/Manila Bulletin as auditor. Also re-elected as directors of the Club are the following: Aya Yupangco, Alvin Murcia (Daily Tribune), Joe Torres (UCA News), Jean Fernando(Manila Bulletin), Jeany Lacorte (Abante), Benedict Abaygar (The Manila Times), Nats Taboy (Remate), Marietta ‘Madz’ Dominguez (Manila Bulletin) , Jun’ Mendoza (Philippine Star) and Bobby Ricohermoso (Saksi).

Secretary Paul Gutierrez and President Lydia Bueno

Today, as NPC is heading forward to the new age of air where social media becomes an active platform of bloggers, mainstream media should not left behind. NPC’s continued efforts to equip fellow media practitioners by providing scholarship including its children, housing program, and creation of livelihood through NPC Cooperative is always in the pipeline of their mission .#
