40 schools in Pangasinan get free weighing scale calibration service, boosts nutrition program

The accuracy of weighing scales used to ensure proper implementation of the malnutrition program in 40 primary and secondary schools in Bayambang, Pangasinan is very important.

Because of this, the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office I (DOST-I), through the Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC) – Pangasinan, conducted a two-day free calibration service of weighing scales last month.

According to Venus M. Bueno, RND, LGU Bayambang Municipal Nutrition Action Officer, they requested assistance from the DOST-Pangasinan as they want to ensure the accuracy of all weighing scales used in all the schools in the municipality.

Julian R. Viray, Project Assistant, and point-person for the calibration service of DOST-Pangasinan led the calibration of a total of 68 units of combined beam balance, salter scales, and infant weighing scales to acceptable standards for free.

As mandated by the law through RA 8180, otherwise known as the Downstream or Industry Deregulation Act of 1996 and Executive Order No. 377, the DOST should prescribe calibration and verification intervals of all measuring instruments used in petroleum products. To fulfill this mandate, the DOST created the Regional Metrology Laboratory (RML) to provide calibration services for Mass, Temperature, Pressure, Length, electricity, and small volume. It uses state-of-the-art calibration equipment and instruments, as well as calibration methods that conform to national & international standards. RML’s main purpose is to ensure the accuracy of measuring equipment by providing standard quality calibrating service to every Filipino.

Also, DOST-I, with its commitment to protecting consumers from unfair trade practices, ensures that businesses and establishments adhere to set standards of volume and mass calibration. Clients who are interested in avail of the services may contact the PSTC at 0917-840-8234/ 0998-962-0227 or send an e-mail at pangasinan2@region1.dost.gov.ph. (Monique C. Esguerra)
