The first Regional Yarn Production and Innovation Center (RYPIC) in the Ilocos Region is set to open on November 20, 2025, coinciding with the celebration of the 2025 National Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (NSTW).
This development follows the recent signing of a memorandum of agreement among the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Ilocos Region, the DOST-Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI), the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte, and the Local Government Unit of Vintar, Ilocos Norte for the establishment and operation of the facility.
The signing ceremony was led by key officials including Provincial Governor Cecilia Araneta Marcos, DOST-PTRI Director Julius L. Leaño, Jr., DOST Ilocos Region Director Teresita A. Tabaog, and Vintar Mayor Richard A. Degala.
As the third RYPIC in the country, following the launch of similar centers in Miagao, Iloilo and Ilagan, Isabela, the Ilocos Norte center aims to strengthen the local textile and weaving industry. Its mission is to utilize indigenous natural fibers and integrate sustainable and science-based technologies into fabric production.
The center is expected to become a hub for research, development, innovation, and yarn production, creating numerous opportunities for farmers, artisans, and entrepreneurs participating in textile value-adding activities.
The inauguration of RYPIC-Ilocos Norte will highlight the region’s growing innovation ecosystem and reinforce the province’s commitment to supporting local arts and crafts, sustainable livelihoods, and circular textile economies, all powered by science and technology.#
