Bukidnon First District Representative, Jose Manuel Alba lauded the efforts of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in fostering growth in rural areas.
He noted that DOST’s support for cooperatives, as well as Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) at the provincial and regional levels, contributes significantly to job creation and prosperity in the local economy. The science department is also known to provide innovative techniques and technologies to startup businesses and livelihood organizations.
“We are beginning to change the perception that opportunities can only be found in the capital (National Capital Region). There are promising prospects in our rural communities as well,” Alba stated during a press conference on November 28, 2024 in Cagayan de Oro City.
Alba is a strong advocate in Congress for alternative livelihoods through circular economy, including the promotion of the bamboo industry. His initiatives spurred the cultivation of bamboo to its processing into raw materials for construction.
The development of the bamboo industry is one of DOST’s highlights at this year’s National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) in Cagayan de Oro City. The event also showcased startup companies and the innovative products developed by MSMEs based in Bukidnon.
DOST Regional Office X director, Romela Ratilla, explained that, as the regional host of this year’s NSTW, the agency aims to provide a platform for community entrepreneurs and scientists to connect with industry leaders. This networking could lead to valuable partnerships and business expansions. #
