PhilAAST 2022 Annual Convention

The Philippine Association for the Advancements of Science and Technology (PhilAAST) will be holding its 71st Annual Convention on September 9, 2022, with this year’s theme “Accelerating Transformations for Sustainable Development Through Science, Technology, and Innovation”. Organized in 1952, the PhilAAST is a non-profit national organization of scientists and technologists that aims to promote scientific advancement in the Philippines through scientific research, technology development, and innovation.

As part of the celebration, PhilAAST will conduct a series of weekly webinars from July 19 to August 25, 2022 to discuss important issues and concerns on five sub-themes that represent some of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. The following are the topics and schedule of the webinar series:

Climate Resilience and Sustainable Communities – 19 July 2022 8:30 AM-12 PM ;

Integrated Energy Solutions Addressing Security and Sustainability – 26 July 2022 8:30 AM-12 PM; Health and Wellness – 9 August 2022 8:30 AM-12 PM; Sustainable Utilization of Water, Land, and Soil Resources – 16 August 2022 8:30 AM-12 PM; Accelerating Transformations of Sustainable Development through STI in Digital Revolution – 25 August 2022 8:30 AM-12 PM.

The first in the webinar series is on Climate Resilience and Sustainable Communities covered two important SDGs, namely Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11) and Climate Action (SDG 13). The webinar covers two important talks from eminent scientists on climate change, its impacts on human communities and environment, and government programs toward achieving
resilience and sustainability. The third talk covers local government initiatives to increase resilience to climate effects in Bayawan City, a relatively young component City in the 3rd Congressional District of the Province of Negros Oriental.

The Second Webinar Series was on Integrated Energy Solutions Addressing Security and Sustainability where the Department of Energy discussed The Philippine Energy Situationer, and drew reactions from panelists representing the Industry and Consumers Group.

Coming up on August 9, 2022 is the Third Webinar Series on Health and Wellness which will cover the following topics: 1) Planetary Health: Impacts of human disruption to Earth’s natural systems on human health; 2) Trends in Health and Nutrition: Improving food security by acceleration of agricultural innovations and capacity-building research and policy; 3) Call to action: Building Resilience Amidst Climate Change Challenges.

The Webinar Series shall drumbeat the main event which is the PhilAAST Convention. The National Meeting on 9 September 2022 will be held from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, wherein, aside from the Plenary Session and Business Meeting, the 2022 winners of the Best Poster Paper and the following PhilAAST awards, will be presented and awarded:
