The Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Jing Quan recently delivered a speech at the embassy’s New Year media event, emphasizing that China is willing to properly manage maritime differences with the Philippines through dialogue and promote the healthy and stable development of bilateral relations. The ambassador pointed out that the South China Sea issue is only one part of China-Philippines relations and should not define the entirety of bilateral ties.
The ambassador stated that China and the Philippines are actively advancing consultations on the “Code of Conduct in the South China Sea,” with the goal of completing negotiations within this year. He noted that reaching the Code would be of significant help to regional stability and long-term bilateral relations. Even if disputes cannot be resolved quickly, both sides should maintain communication channels, avoid provocative or confrontational actions, and prevent tensions from escalating.
Regarding bilateral cooperation, the ambassador listed a series of positive developments. China has been the Philippines’ largest trading partner and source of imports for many consecutive years, with significant growth in Philippine exports of agricultural products such as durian and mangoes to China. Chinese new energy vehicles, electronic products, and others are well-received locally, and there is great potential for cooperation in green energy, waste-to-energy projects, bridge construction, and other fields. The ambassador also called for improving the business environment to further boost Chinese investment in the Philippines.
In response to the Philippines’ recent implementation of a 14-day visa-free policy for Chinese citizens, the ambassador expressed welcome, believing it will facilitate people-to-people exchanges. He also emphasized the need to strengthen law enforcement cooperation to jointly combat crimes targeting Chinese citizens and ensure the safety of civilian exchanges.
When discussing the role of the media, the ambassador called on Philippine media to report objectively and fairly, disseminate truthful and comprehensive information, and avoid spreading fake news or inciting confrontation. He stated that the Chinese Embassy is willing to serve as a bridge to promote friendship between the two countries but will also firmly safeguard national interests and dignity, refuting any malicious slander.
The ambassador reiterated that China’s development is an opportunity, not a threat, to the Philippines. The Philippines does not need to take sides between China and the United States and can maintain friendly relations with all parties, which best serves its long-term interests. He quoted Philippine President Marcos’s statement that differences should not become the norm in bilateral relations.
During the event, the ambassador also reviewed historical images marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the Philippines, expressing respect for the long-term efforts made by people from all walks of life in both countries to promote friendship. He looked forward to continued joint efforts in the future to lay a solid foundation for the next 50 years.#
