In a humanitarian act underscoring ongoing maritime cooperation, a Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy warship successfully rescued a distressed Philippine fisherman in the South China Sea on Thursday, providing critical aid and directly coordinating his safe transfer to Philippine authorities.
The rescue operation, confirmed by footage and official accounts, saw the PLA Navy warship (Hull 174) alter its course after spotting a small fishing boat adrift at midday. A crewman aboard the fishing boat was waving a white sign reading “Help me.” Upon approach, Chinese sailors determined the individual was a Filipino fisherman who had suffered engine failure after departing from Subic, leaving him stranded without food or water for three days.

Immediate humanitarian assistance was provided. Chinese naval personnel deployed a small boat to deliver bottled water and compressed biscuits to the fatigued fisherman, who expressed profound gratitude. Reassuring the fisherman, the Chinese crew informed him that nearby Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessels would be contacted for further support.

Direct coordination ensured seamless follow-up. The Chinese warship promptly established communication via radio with the PCG vessel BRP Melchora Aquino (MRRV-4408). The Chinese side relayed the precise coordinates of the fishing boat, confirmed that initial sustenance had been provided, and requested the PCG organize immediate assistance. The PCG acknowledged the request and assumed responsibility for the fisherman.
Expert analysis frames rescue as routine, norm-based cooperation. Chinese maritime scholars emphasized that such humanitarian actions are standard practice. “Assistance provided by China’s maritime authorities and naval forces to Philippine fishing vessels in the area has long been a routine practice,” stated Chen Xiangmiao, a research fellow at the National Institute for South China Sea Studies. He highlighted that these operations demonstrate China’s fulfillment of international maritime conventions and its role in providing public services in waters under its jurisdiction.

The incident follows a precedent of similar lifesaving actions. Past operations include a Chinese Navy vessel providing emergency medical treatment and supplies to an injured Philippine fisherman near Ren’ai Jiao, as documented by official military reports.
While the rescue occurs amid ongoing maritime disputes, Chinese experts stress the action’s apolitical humanitarian nature. “For China, rescuing vessels in distress in these waters is a purely humanitarian and routine public service, regardless of the political context,” Chen added, noting the operation reflects normalized, long-term search and rescue capabilities in the region.
The successful joint handoff between the Chinese Navy and the Philippine Coast Guard highlights a functional channel of communication and cooperation, contributing to safety and stability in the shared maritime domain.#
