Quezon City, Philippines – November 24, 2025 – The Technological Institute of the Philippines, Quezon City (TIP QC) proudly hosted the opening ceremony of the 2025 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) for the National Capital Region (NCR) at its Anniversary Hall in Quezon City. With the theme “Building Smart and Sustainable Communities,” the event brought together key leaders from government, industry, and academia to celebrate and advance science, technology, and innovation (STI) as pillars of national progress.
The ceremony began with traditional protocols, including the Philippine National Anthem, invocations, and hymns, followed by a performance by the TIP Chorale.
In his Welcome Remarks, TIP President Mr. Angelo Q. Lahoz expressed deep honor in hosting this year’s RSTW, emphasizing the alignment of the event’s theme with TIP’s institutional mission. “The theme clearly aligns with our school’s ongoing research, development, and innovation activities that aim to build safer and more sustainable communities,” stated President Lahoz.
He highlighted several flagship TIP initiatives demonstrating this commitment:
- The ALAB-EU Project: Funded by the DOST Science for Change Program, this initiative extends the lifespan of lead-acid batteries, optimizing usage and reducing waste. The technology already holds a patent in Japan, with Philippine registration pending.
- The H-34 Project: Supported by DOST grants, this project focuses on developing a hydrogen energy storage system, poised to contribute to the country’s future energy security.
- The FICA Vortex System: A DOST Collaborative Research and Development to Leverage Philippine Economy (CRADLE)-funded wastewater treatment solution currently deployed in Subic, Zambales, with potential for modular, household-level application to protect waterways.
- The PASADA System: Featured in the exhibit hall, this DOST Fast Track-supported technology uses embedded sensors to monitor and improve driver behavior, promoting safer road systems.
President Lahoz underscored that these projects exemplify TIP’s role in creating the right ecosystem for collaboration. “We hope that by hosting this event, we create a wonderful venue for current and even new stakeholders to further collaborate, ideate, identify noteworthy technologies, and become friends and partners,” he added.
The program featured addresses from top Department of Science and Technology (DOST) officials. Engr. Romelen T. Tresvalles, Regional Director of DOST-NCR, delivered the Opening Message, followed by an Inspirational Message from Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang, Undersecretary for Regional Operations. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr., Secretary of DOST, who outlined the national STI agenda in building resilient and innovative communities.
The ceremony also served as a platform for significant partnerships and launches, including:
- The ceremonial signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) and Memoranda of Agreement (MOAs).
- The turnover of TIP ADAPT Tools for MSMEs and the STI Plans for Pasig City and Caloocan City.
- Launch of initiatives like GeoRiskPH Adoption with PHIVOLCS for disaster resilience, the CITIES360 Program, and a Circular Economy partnership with Sentinel and BEST Inc.
- A sustainable fashion showcase, “Lakbay Disenyo: From Threads to Treads,” by the Philippine Footwear Federation and DOST’s Philippine Textile Research Institute.
Mr. Oscar B. Sevilla Jr., OIC of DOST-NCR PAMAMARISAN, provided an overview of the week-long RSTW activities. The event culminated with the official opening of the 2025 RSTW Exhibit, showcasing cutting-edge technologies and sustainable solutions from DOST, TIP, and various partners, presided over by DOST and TIP officials.
The 2025 RSTW in NCR, hosted by TIP, stands as a testament to the powerful synergy between educational institutions, government agencies, and industry in harnessing science and technology for a “Matatag, Maginhawa at Panatag na Kinabukasan” (Stable, Comfortable, and Secure Future).#
