CSU Unveils Fully Electric C-Trike at NSTW

CSU Unveils Fully Electric C-Trike, Paving the Way for Greener Transport at 2025 National S&T Week

A groundbreaking initiative for sustainable public transport is taking center stage at the 2025 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) celebration, as the Cagayan State University (CSU) presents the C-Trike, a fully electric, zero-emission vehicle designed to revolutionize local transit.

Developed by CSU’s ElectroMobility Research and Development Center (EMRDC), the Converted Electric Tricycle (C-Trike) represents a significant leap towards cleaner and smarter mobility for the region. The project is a collaborative effort, backed by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD), DOST Region 2, and the University of the Philippines Diliman.

With a substantial total project funding of Php 79.4 million, the C-Trike is a flagship component of the DOST’s national Smart and Sustainable Communities Program (SSCP). The program aims to advance eco-friendly transportation solutions and reduce the country’s dependence on traditional, fuel-powered vehicles.

Positioned as a direct green alternative to gasoline-run tricycles, the C-Trike boasts impressive performance credentials, capable of traveling up to 80 kilometers on a single charge. This range makes it a practical and ideal option for daily urban routes. The project is already gaining significant traction, with initial dialogues underway with the Federation of Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (FETODA). Stakeholders are anticipating a local ordinance to formally regulate the use of converted electric tricycles, paving the way for their integration into the public transport system.

To accelerate the move from prototype to public roads, CSU has taken a crucial step by signing Technology Licensing Agreements with ACT Machineries and Metal Craft Corporation and Suki Trading Corporation. These partnerships open the door for mass production and the eventual rollout of C-Trikes to other localities seeking sustainable transport alternatives.

This initiative not only underscores CSU’s commitment to future-ready innovations but also elevates the university’s role as a leading catalyst for science-driven, environmentally responsible solutions.

The C-Trike is one of the many featured initiatives at the 2025 NSTW celebration. The week-long event, anchored on the sub-theme “Building Smart and Sustainable Communities,” will showcase a range of research and development projects and scientific services designed to offer long-term solutions to pressing community challenges.

The 2025 NSTW is open to the public and will run from November 18 to 21, 2025, in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte. For the complete list of activities and schedule, follow the NSTW Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/nstwdost or visit the NSTW website at http://nstw.dost.gov.ph.#
