NAST PHL highlights Bioscience as key driver for inclusive growth at 47th Annual Scientific Meeting

The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) successfully concluded its 47th Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) on July 9–10, 2025, at The Manila Hotel, focusing on the theme: “Bioscience Innovations: Transforming Enterprise Ecosystems for Wealth Creation.”

The event brought together leading scientists, policymakers, industry partners, and international experts to explore how bioscience can serve as a catalyst for sustainable and inclusive economic development.

In his opening address, NAST PHL President Academician Jaime C. Montoya stressed the importance of leveraging bioscience to address national challenges and uplift communities through science-based policies and inclusive enterprise models. He called for multi-sector collaboration to turn research into tangible benefits for society.

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr. reinforced the government’s commitment to supporting research translation through programs like CRADLE, SETUP, and the newly launched PROPEL, which aim to bridge academic research with industry needs and accelerate technology commercialization.

Professor Ivan Marusic, Vice President of the Australian Academy of Science, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the role of cross-border collaboration in maximizing bioscience’s potential. He cited ongoing Australia-Philippines partnerships in coral reef restoration, crop disease resistance, and support for smallholder farmers.

The two-day event featured six plenary sessions covering topics such as community empowerment through bioscience, agricultural innovation, engineering integration, health advancements, the role of math and physical sciences, and social dimensions for inclusive development.

A major outcome of the meeting was the presentation of the 47th ASM Resolutions by Academician Rhodora V. Azanza. These include policy recommendations to mainstream bioscience in national programs, invest in R&D infrastructure, and strengthen local innovation ecosystems. The resolutions were formally received by DOST Secretary Solidum and DEPDev Undersecretary Dr. Joseph Capuno.

The event also recognized outstanding contributions to science with the presentation of NAST PHL Awards and the investiture of three new Academicians: Dr. Leocadio S. Sebastian (Agricultural Science), Dr. Charles Y. Yu (Medical Education), and Dr. Wilfredo Roehl Y. Licuanan (Marine Biology).

In his closing remarks, NAST PHL Vice President Academician Alvin B. Culaba urged the scientific community to continue driving innovation in line with PAGTANAW 2050—a vision for a science-driven, inclusive, and resilient Philippines.

NAST PHL remains the country’s highest advisory body on science and technology, providing evidence-based guidance to national leadership in shaping a prosperous future through science and innovation.#
