Manila Water, UP Diliman ink MOA on research program to enhance wastewater management

Manila Water and the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) recently signed the memorandum of agreement (MOA) on a research program called the Removal of Excess Nitrogen and Endocrine Disruptors from Wastewater (RENEW) at Manila Water’s Main Office in Balara, Quezon City.

(From left) Manila Water Group Director for Operations Joemar Emboltorio, UP Diliman Vice Chancellor for Research and Development Carl Michael Odulio, and Manila Water Strategic Asset Management Group Director Eva Clemente sealed the partnership between the two institutions with the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement on Project RENEW.

With the signing of the MOA, Manila Water becomes one of UPD’s industry partners in this initiative where the water company will collaborate with the state university in enhancing water and wastewater management capabilities.

Project RENEW aims to improve the removal of nitrogen and endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) from wastewater. EDCs pose significant risks to both the environment and public health. One main component of the project is to develop microbial solutions that will enhance wastewater treatment, particularly Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) for nitrogen and the degradation of EDCs.

Funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development, Project RENEW is a research initiative headed by the University of the Philippines Diliman. It also has the full support of the Environmental Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.#
