In support of the government’s program to comprehensively manage air pollution in the country through air quality monitoring, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Environmental Management Bureau National Capital Region (DENR EMB-NCR) has partnered with SM Prime Holdings Inc. (SMPHI) for the establishment of a real-time Air Quality Monitoring Station (AQMS) in this city.
SMPHI, one of the largest integrated property developers in Asia, signed up for the Adopt-a-CAMS (Continuous Ambient Air Monitoring System) Program of the EMB to align with the Philippine Clean Air Act or Republic Act 8749, and advance the country’s sustainable development goals.
“Land use and urban planning drive mobility-based and stationary emissions sources. These, in turn, have public health and climate change implications for people, ecosystems and environments. Everyone is stakeholder in the air we breathe and the quality of our living conditions. This donation reflects the importance of collective action to tackle air pollution and protect public health,” DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga said.
“The AQMS serves as a vital tool for gathering data that will shape evidence-based policies, benefiting both the environment and the residents of Quezon City. By participating in the Adopt-a-CAMS program, the SMPHI not only assists in strengthening EMB-NCR’s capacity to monitor and address air quality issues but also sets an example for other corporations to actively contribute to environmental protection and public welfare,” said Secretary Loyzaga.
The AQMS is now operational and is located within the SMPHI property in Matandang Balara, Quezon City. The station can measure particulate matter 10 and 2.5 (PM10 and PM2.5) and is seamlessly integrated with the EMB-NCR’s Data Acquisition and Handling System (DAHS). This connectivity allows for real-time transmission of air quality data to the bureau’s central database, enabling policymakers and environmental agencies to respond effectively to air quality concerns in the National Capital Region. #
