Inobasyong tutukoy sa mga sakit ng saging, magpapalakas sa industriya

Ang Pilipinas ay isa sa mga nangungunang bansang pinag-aangkatan ng saging sa mundo. Ngunit dahil sa pagkalat ng mga sakit ng saging sa bansa, bahagyang bumaba at humina ang produksyon nito. Upang matulungan ang industriya ng saging, isang propesor mula Mindanao ang lumikha ng inobasyong tutulong sa mga magsasaka upang agarang matukoy at maagapan ang paglaganap ng mga sakit sa saging.

Ayon kay Dr. Edward A. Barlaan ng University of Southern Mindanao (USM), kayang tukuyin ng mga ‘DNA Probe Kit’ ang iba’t ibang impeksyon sa saging na dala ng mga sakit na ‘Panama Wilt,’ ‘Moko,’ ‘Bacterial Wilt,’ at ‘Banana Bunchy Top Virus.’ Ang mga ito ay gumagamit ng ‘quantitative real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction’ (qPCR) at ‘digital Polymerase Chain Reaction’ (dPCR) na napabibilis at napadadali ang proseso ng pagtukoy ng sakit kumpara sa nakasanayang pamamaraan. Ito rin ang unang naitalang paggamit ng dPCR para matukoy ang mga sakit sa saging.

Dahil kritikal ang oras at panahon sa pagpigil sa mga sakit ng mga pananim, importanteng mabilis nitong nakakalap ang mga impormasyon sa kahit pinakamaliit na impeksyong dulot ng mga nasabing sakit isa hanggang apat na linggo mula nang ito ay mahawaan.

Dagdag pa rito, ang mga DNA Probe Kit ay nakaayon batay sa bawa’t uri ng sakit kaya nasisigurong tama at maaasahan ang resulta.

Sa kasalukuyan, tinatangkilik ang mga DNA Probe Kit ng mga malalaking kumpanya tulad ng Tagum Agricultural Development Company, Inc. (TADECO), Lapanday Foods, at DOLE Philippines. (Karl Vincent S. Mendez, DOST-PCAARRD S&T Media Services)
