Si Jesus Tanchanco Sr. ang unang Administrador ng National Food Authority. Itinatag ni Tanchanco ang NFA sa panahon ni Pangulong Ferdinand Edralin Marcos at nagsilbi bilang administrador mula 1972 hanggang 1986.
Nagsilbi sya bilang Ministro ng pagkain, Administrador ng NFA at Pangulo ng Food Terminal Inc. Siya rin ay isang assemblyman ng Malabon, Navotas at Valenzuela noong Pansamantalang Batasang Pambansa.

Pinamunuan din niya ang Heart Foundation of the Philippines, agriculture committee ng Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry; at ang Metro Manila Chamber of Commerce and Industry Development Cooperative. Naglingkod siya bilang Vice Chair ng Committee on Fruits and Vegetables ng Department of Agriculture at naging Board of Director ng National Marketing Umbrella at ang minimum access volume units ng DA.

Nakuha ni Tanchanco ang kanyang Bachelor of Business Administration degree mula sa University of the East noong 1953. Bilang isang UE alumnus, nagsilbi siya bilang Executive Director ng Marketing Department nito at naging miyembro ng Board of trustees. Itinalaga rin siyang Team Manager ng UE Red Warriors Men’s Basketball Team.

Namatay Abril 14, 2014 sa UE Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center matapos makaranas ng pananakit ng dibdib at idineklara ng mga doktor na cardiac arrest ang sanhi ng kanyang pagkamatay. Inilibing sya sa Holy Cross Memorial Park sa Novaliches.

Naiwan niya ang kanyang asawang si Alice Martinez-Tanchanco at apat na anak na sina Jesus Jr., Alfredo, Ma. Carina, at Tomas.#
