DA launches Food Security Caravan in Payatas, pays tribute to Bonifacio’s legacy

The Department of Agriculture-Project Management Office (DA-PMO) for Poverty Reduction, Livelihood, and Employment Cluster launched on November 30 the Food Security Caravan, in an identified white area of the Communist Terrorist Group in Payatas B, Quezon City.

This initiative, which focused on DA’s Urban Agriculture Program, was undertaken in honor of the birth of the Filipino revolutionary leader Andres Bonifacio, whose patriotism and ideals in aiding poor communities inspired the DA-PMO to initiate the caravan. The program integrates agricultural development programs such as the National Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture (NUPAP) to address the growing concerns of food insecurity by creating food-and-nutrient-secured urban communities.

Led by the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) and Barangay Payatas officials, headed by Captain Rascal Doctor, the launch featured a demonstration of basic urban gardening conducted by the BPI. The event also highlighted available programs and support from the Department of Agriculture (DA) that residents can avail themselves of.

Furthermore, the Barangay Council pledged 16 hectares for the establishment of multiplier farms, supported by NUPAP and various agricultural development programs. Residents were also encouraged and supported in forming farmer groups and cooperatives to enhance their access to government services.

DA-PMO Chairman Assistant Secretary James Layug expressed his support for the activity and mentioned that this will empower communities in the Communist Terrorist Group white areas, offering a path to sustainable peace through the strengthening of communal capabilities.

The event concluded with the DA handing over seedlings and planting materials to Barangay Captain Doctor, along with the distribution of seeds to over 200 residents. #
