NAST PHL, DOST regional offices tie up for the 2023 Regional Scientific Meetings

BICUTAN, TAGUIG CITY – The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Offices will be holding the 2023 Regional Scientific Meetings (RSMs) with the theme “Agham at Teknolohiya para sa Demokrasya (Science and Technology for Democracy).”

The RSMs are annually organized as part of the NAST PHL’s and DOST’s long-standing commitment of bringing science closer to the Filipino people. The RSMs, which will be held for Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao island clusters, are expected to provide a venue for the discussion of relevant and timely regional concerns, and the presentation of S&T-based recommendations.

This year’s RSM and ASM theme is firmly grounded on the role of science and technology in catalyzing and advancing developmental empowerment in a democracy. The scientific meetings will serve as a forum to discuss the role of science and technology in achieving greater inclusion and welfare. The regional gatherings also aim to present the utilization of science and technology in strengthening democratic institutions and processes.

In preparation for the RSMs, the NAST PHL Social Sciences Division hosted two pre-ASM roundtable discussions (RTDs), which provided valuable insights and different perspectives on democratization. The first RTD highlighted the importance of social scientists in understanding democratization and its various components, including good governance, leadership, citizenship, political participation, and the impact of social media.

The second RTD revolved around fiscal democratization programs such as the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) and the Senior High School Voucher Program. The insights from the RSMs and pre-ASM roundtable discussions will be important inputs to the resolutions of the 45th Annual Scientific Meeting of NAST PHL, which will be held on 12-13 July 2023.

Another highlight of the RSM is the annual scientific poster session. The annual contest will feature the latest regional research outputs of participating higher education institutions, research centers, and government agencies. Posters to be presented in the poster session will be screened by the DOST Regional Offices.

The 2023 RSMs are scheduled on April 12-13 for Mindanao in Davao City, April 26-27 for Visayas via Zoom, and May 17-18 for Luzon in Baguio City. The RSMs are going to be hosted by NAST PHL in partnership with DOST CAR Regional Office (Luzon), DOST Regional Office VIII (Visayas), and DOST Regional Office XI (Mindanao) as the regional leads.

Due to the limited onsite participation, the general public can still join the conference virtually via Zoom. Registration is FREE and open to the public. Public plenary sessions of the conference will be held from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Participants will receive an e-certificate for both dates of the regional meeting upon submission of an accomplished evaluation form.
