DA Urban Agriculture Program at BuCor continues

Intensive cultivation and planting of various crops continue at the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) in Muntinlupa under the Urban Agriculture Program of the Department of Agriculture (DA).

Under the supervision of DA-Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI), Crop Research and Development Division, more crops were introduced and planted in the developed agricultural land within BuCor.

Launched during pandemic, the project which will convert more than a hundred hectares of arable land aims to support food production initiatives for Metro Manila residents especially in time of crisis and faced with food security challenges.

The farm is being managed by BuCor staff and officials and PDL’s with the assistance of BPI UA Team and other DA agencies such as BAI, BFAR and BSWM. BPI continually monitors and assists in the implementation of cropping activities, cultivation and farm management, pest control and trainings.

In November, during BuCor’s 115th Anniversary, a ceremonial harvesting of eggplants, mungbean, squash, corns, bananas and papayas was conducted.

The farm has been very productive and has been supplying fruits and vegetables to PDL’s at BuCors and its staff.

Collaboration with other government agencies and institutions, converting existing resources like idle lands and turning them into productive agricultural enterprise, are some of the strategies of DA to combat food security threats. # # # (DA-BPI)BUREAU OF PLANT INDUSTRY
