Mechanical and chemical technologies applied for patent through PCAARRD intervention

A total of 41 mechanical and chemical technologies developed by state universities and colleges (SUCs) in the country were filed for patent.

The patents were filed as outputs of the 3rd Intellectual Property (IP) Master Class organized by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD).

A total of 22 mechanical technologies were filed online while 19 chemical technologies were filed online by the trainees of the Master Class.

Aside from the outputs of the Master Class, more technologies generated by SUCs are being protected through the Council’s program, “Intellectual Property and Technology Business Management (IP-TBM).”

The third batch of IP Master Class will conclude with its final module in October 2020.

In the first three modules of the virtual training, the participants successfully drafted quality claims for patenting local inventions. Module 4, which was conducted in two batches – the Mechanical and Chemical groups, focused on building up skills of the trainees on claim amendments, patent prosecution, and filing online IP applications. The trainees were able to draft responses to formality and substantive examination reports (FERs and SERs).

Atty. Editha R. Hechanova, President of Association of PAQE Professionals, Inc. (APP), opened the program for the two batches of trainings. Atty. Bayani B. Loste and Mr. Dindo O. Dumali were key speakers for the mechanical group, while Atty. Jerry C. Serapion with Mr. Caesar Angelito E. Arceo were key speakers for the chemical group. Their other colleagues from APP—Ms. Ana Maria A. Chupungco, Atty. Jose Eduardo T. Genilo, Ms. Anna May A. Ramos, and Ms. Jewel Joanna S. Cabardo, Dr. Jonathan Winston L.  Salvacion, served as facilitators to the 30 participants from 30 State Colleges and Universities.

Dumali and his team from IPOPHL, discussed their e-services and guided the trainees to the online filing processes. On the last day of the training, Atty. Lolibeth R. Medrano, Director – Bureau of Patents of IPOPHL, discussed the Philippines’ innovation milestone with regard to the 2020 Global Innovation Index (GII). Atty. Medrano also talked about the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) filing systems and its benefits to the international patenting system.

On Module 5, intellectual property concepts such as freedom to operate and infringement were covered. Participants are now getting ready for the mock exams for patent agents to be conducted before their graduation (Cherry B. Bundalian, DOST-PCAARRD S&T Media Services).
