Rainwater harvesting made safe, easy

Rainwater harvesting made safe, easy

Pila-balde or lining up for hours to get water is now a thing of the past.

The Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) has made safe and easy rainwater harvesting and storage for reuse on-site.

Rather than allowing it to run off, one can collect rainwater from rivers or roofs and in other places, and redirect it to a modular rainwater collection system made from nanocomposite thermoplastic geomembrane.

Developed by DOST-ITDI, the technology addresses water scarcity for non-potable domestic use in the metropolis. Easy to install, deploy, and store when not needed, the system can fit into most individual homes.

The collection system is fashioned from a geomembrane or liner made by compounding high-density plastic with nano calcium carbonate.

Unlike your metal or plastic tanks, ITDI’s system in an “as is state”

  • Displays thick and compact sheets;

  • Has high melt flow index such that it can easily be formed, but low enough such that its mechanical strength is sufficient for its purpose; and

  • Does not allow water or solvent migration.

Further, adopters of the system are assured that the materials used has passed the mechanical performance tests for

The modular rainwater collection system is one of 21 ITDI-developed technologies selected to be featured in Cluster 1 – Food Security, Energy, and Environment of the 2019 National S&T Week (NSTW) Exhibits slated on July 17-21, 2019 at the World Trade Center-Metro Manila. Admission to the exhibits is FREE. It is open to the public from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

NSTW is celebrated every third week of July through Proclamation No. 169 of 1993 to highlight significant contributions of S&T to national development. (AMGuevarra\\ ITDI S&T Media Service)
