DAR trains farmers to become entrepreneurs

Provincial Agrarian Reform Officer Elvira B. Bation and Municipal Agrarian Reform Program Officer Gersyval Vestal sign the memorandum of agreement with the barangay officials of Carmen, Toledo City headed by Punong Barangay Miguel Bastillas Ipis held at the CAFA Training Center.

CEBU CITY—The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) in Cebu recently launched a Farm Business School (FBS) program in Carmen, Toledo City and Colonia, Tuburan to help farmers build knowledge and skills on agricultural business to make their farms more profitable.

This project came about after the DAR, with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Agriculture (DA), DA-Agricultural Training Institute (DA-ATI), and the local government units (LGUs) signed a memorandum of agreement to help farmer-beneficiaries from the said areas.

Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer Elvira B. Bation said the soon-to-be “farm-entrepreneurs” will undergo 25 sessions of farm business school for four months where they will learn the business side of agriculture using their own local environment as the FBS program takes the school to the farmers.

“The learning process will be interactive as the farmers will learn from each other. The facilitators will be there to teach and develop their capacity in running a profitable farm business by honing the farmers into becoming better farm managers and entrepreneurs that can respond to business and market requirements,” added Bation.

The beneficiaries of the FBS are members of the Carmen Farmers Association (CAFA), of Toledo City, and the Panaghugpong sa Molupyo sa Colonia (PAMOCO) of Tuburan.

The farm business school is established by the DAR, DA-ATI and the LGUs of Toledo and Tuburan. (Yuna Kintanar, DAR-Cebu information officer)
