PLANTING RICE READIES SOIL FOR HIGH VALUE CROPS

The Department of Agriculture said today planting rice enriches the soil and it becomes more suitable for planting high value crops.

Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said, by planting rice, the soil becomes submerged and becomes more favorable for growing vegetables, which are of higher value.

He added, if the soil is not submerged, the vegetable crops will be prone to diseases.

“Planting rice not only feeds the populace but is also beneficial to the environment,” Alcala said.

According to the Secretary, silage from milling rice now also have value as a source of energy.

The DA earlier said it plans to enhance research and development on rice to further improve rice production nationwide.

The Department intends to commercialize integrated rice-based farming for the country’s rice harvest to continue its upward trend.

“The Department also intends to engage in profiling, finger printing and purification of traditional varieties with export potentials,” Alcala said.

He added, regional/provincial location specific technology development and adaptive studies for irrigated, rain-fed and upland ecosystem, is also included in the DA’s agenda.

Participatory varietal selection for favorable and adverse environment is included in the DA’s planned R&D for rice.

The DA will also enhance rice research capability and capacity, which includes improving and increasing facilities, equipment and manpower.
