QC WIDENS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Quezon City Councilor Bayani V. Hipol has announced that the QC government already has 2,212 scholars in its non-academic programs.

The newly launched non-academic learning program of the city government, in addition to the long-term 4-year college courses offered to graduating secondary students, is a response to a resolution stretching the city’s free education program to support out-of-school youth and high school students who will be affected by the Department of Education’s (DepEd) K-to-12 educational program.

In a resolution proposed by 4th District Councilor Bayani V. Hipol and 2ndDistrict Councilor Ramon P. Medalla, the city council unanimously approved the supplemental amendments to the Quezon City Scholarship Program and its implementing guidelines thus expanding the same to help students and non-students who wish to take vocational or technical courses, including enrollment in a driving school, or have financial difficulties in finishing their grade 11 to 12 senior high school studies.

The resolution seeks to lessen the financial burden that the additional 2 years in high school that students and parents will have to bear when the K-to 12 education program is fully implemented.

The Quezon City Government widened its scholarship program in support of the poor but deserving out-of-school youth and students who will be affected by the K-to-12 program of the Department of Education (DepEd).

The office of Councilor Hipol, as a result consultations with the city’s non-academic scholars, allotted P7.86 million to fund the city’s scholarship program with the intention of sending qualified students and non-students to school, adding some 260 academic scholars and 909 non-academic and non-collegiate scholars to the SYDP’s long list of scholars for this year.

The resolution also urged the city government to continuously allocate funds for the program to ensure financial assistance to the city’s scholar-beneficiaries until they finish their studies.

According to Councilor Hipol, the QC government will also shoulder the expenses of securing the driving license for those who are enrolled in a driving course.(Maureen Quiñones, PAISO)
