QC BRACES FOR SUMMER DISEASES

The Quezon City government is urging the public to be on guard against common summer diseases.

QC health department asst. city health officer  Dr. Verdades P. Linga said that a city-wide information campaign is being conducted by its health workers to make the public aware of proper measures for the prevention of diseases this hot season. Activities include pre-clinic lectures, mothers’ classes and distribution of information materials on  disease-prevention in all 142 barangays.

Common illnesses during summer are heat stroke, gastroenteritis, sunburn and rashes, sore eyes, cough and colds, hypertension, chicken pox, food poisoning and rabies (from dog bites).

Dr. Linga said city health centers have enough supplies of medicines ready for distribution to persons in need especially indigents.

She advises the public to avoid unnecessary exposure to sunlight, particularly from 10am to 3pm; limit outdoor activities or stay indoors if at all possible; apply sunscreen or sun block before exposure to the sun; wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing as well as hats, caps and sunglasses as much as possible; drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration; practice proper and frequent hand washing to prevent spread of infection; and be cautious of food preparation and storage.

Avoid unnecessary delays in seeking consultation, especially for aggravated infants, young children and the elderly.

“Let us enjoy a healthy summer season through an ounce of prevention and early recognition,” says Dr. Linga.(Maureen Quiñones, PAISO)
