Scholarship handog ng DOST para sa mga nasalanta ng Bagyong Yolanda

Sa kabila ng pananalanta ng Bagyong Yolanda noong December 8, 2013 sa Visayas, di ito naging dahilan para panghinaan ng loob ang mga mamamayan particular na ang mga ‘Waraynoons’ tawag sa mga native mula sa Region VIII.

Sa kabila nito, di maikakaila ang naging masalimuot na dulot nito sa mga lugar na kanyang sinalanta. Maraming ari-arian ang nasira at higit sa lahat libo-libo ang namatay.

Masakit isipin ngunit ito ang katotohanang naganap nang manalanta ang tinaguriang super typhoon na Yolanda.

Isa sa mga pinakamalalaking naapektuhan nga nito ay ang sector ng edukasyon sa lugar. Maraming paaralan at pasilidad ang winasak ng bagyo. At napuno ng agam-agam ang mga mag-aaral kung ano na ang magiging kahihinatnan ng kanilang kinabukasan particular sa mga nakatakda sanang magtapos.

Upang bigyang pag-asa at muling buhayin ang kanilang mga pangarap, nagbigay ng scholarship ang Department of Science and Technology- Region VIII (DOST-Region VIII) sa mga mahihirap ngunit talantadong mag-aaral nito. Noong July 2014 nga ay sinimulan na ng DOST VIII ang kanilang caravan para sa Republic Act 7687 (RA7687) o ang DOST Scholarship Program. Magbibigay  din sila ng Merit Scholarship Program para naman sa mga mag-aaral na mas nakakaangat sa buhay. Ang parehong programa ay ini-implementa ng DOST sa pamamagitan ng isa sa kanyang mga ahensya, ang Science Education Institute (SEI).

Sa pamamagitan ng DOST’s scholarship, matutulungan nito ang mga kabataan na makapag-aral at abutin ang kanilang mga pangarap. (Freda Migano)
