QC TO HOST PHL EARTH HOUR

Quezon City has been chosen by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) – Philippines as official partner for the hosting of the country’s Earth Hour celebration on March 28 (Saturday) at the Quezon Memorial Circle .

During the celebration, lights adorning the QMC pylon will be turned off for an hour starting at 8:30 p.m. as QC joins key cities all over the world for a one-hour no-lights activity.

Mayor Herbert Bautista will lead city officials during the ceremonial switch off.

Aside from the pylon, the city government, on orders of the Mayor, will also be switching off the streetlights at the QC Hall compound, and along Elliptical Road , Visayas Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue , to highlight the city’s participation in the Earth Hour initiative.

The Mayor also enjoined business establishment owners, especially mall owners, to support the lights out activity.

Barangay officials, students from the city’s division of city schools as well as city residents will also be enjoined to participate in the one-hour environmental campaign, said city administrator Aldrin Cuña.

The office of the city administrator is coordinating the city’s participation in the Earth Hour initiative.

Meanwhile, the EPWMD will be conducting a free photography workshop on March 28from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in support to the Earth Hour celebration.

Participants shall be given the opportunity to apply what they have learned during the workshop by documenting the event at the QMC.

The first Earth Hour took place in 2007 in Sydney , Australia as a statement of support for a united call for action on climate change and energy conservation.
