QC COUNCILORS AIR SUPPORT FOR STRONGER ANTI-CARNAPPING BILL

In a bid to lessen if not totally eradicate carnapping cases, twenty- six members of the Quezon City Council are calling for the enactment of a proposal in Congress to make carnapping a non-bailable crime.

In a resolution, QC councilors led by Councilor Godofredo Liban II are calling for a strong support to the move that will make carnapping a non-bailable crime as a deterrent to the rampant and growing proliferation of said crime in the country, particularly in Metro Manila.

The QC Council resolution, which already passed on second reading last June 6, noted that most of carnapping incidents that happened in Metro Manila alone, had resulted in death to some drivers or owners of vehicle as in the case of Marlon Quicho, driver of Judge  Racquelen Vasquez, who was shot dead in front of his employer’s house in Geronino St. Tandang Sora, Quezon City last July 29.

“It is hoped that making carnapping a non-bailable crime may provide a deterrent to the rampant proliferation of the said crime,” Liban said.

He added that carnappers are growing bolder and even appear to be taunting the police authorities in the face, thus a stronger law against carnapping, which is to make the crime non-bailable, needs to be passed immediately to help solve the problem.

The lawmaker believed that carnappers, especially those who belong to syndicates, could easily post bail for the crime they committed and eventually repeat their crime. Maureen Quiñones, PAISO
