MMDA URGED TO DEPUTIZE QC BPSOs FOR TRAFFIC DUTY

A neophyte Councilor has urged Chairman Francis Tolentino of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority to deputize qualified barangay officials of Quezon City to direct the flow of traffic within the jurisdiction of the city.

Councilor Ranulfo Ludovica said the purpose of deputizing barangay officials or the Barangay Public Safety Officers (BPSOs) to direct the flow of traffic is to help the MMDA in enforcing traffic rules on major thoroughfares in Quezon City.

Ludovica, who is also president of the QC Liga ng mga Barangay, said that although the MMDA has the competence and expertise in the said function, it cannot be denied that its personnel are not enough to fully implement all traffic laws and regulations and to closely monitor all traffic situations.

The deficiency in traffic personnel leads to traffic jams and sometimes vehicular accidents caused by traffic violations most especially in major thoroughfares, he said.

The Councilor believes that our barangay officials and BPSOs can help

in traffic management, being familiar with the roads in their respective barangays.

More importantly, Ludovica said that the presence of BPSOs in a traffic accident situations can help in the apprehension of the driver or in determining the identity of the culprit. Divine/ Maureen Quiñones, PAISO
