BSWM makes tree planting regular activity

The Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) of the Department of Agriculture (DA) will widen its tree planting activities this year, since trees play an important role in rejuvenating watershed areas which are necessary in creating efficient farming areas, and stopping desertification and drought.

During the celebration of Soil Conservation Month for the year 2011, BSWM Executive Director Silvino Tejada said that the agency will make tree planting a regular activity.

This year’s celebration coincided with the celebration of the “world day” to combat desertification with the theme “Forest Keep Dryland Working”.

“The objective of the theme is to create awareness to the general public, policy makers and the international community to the increasing danger brought about by desertification, land degradation and drought,” Tejada said.

To commemorate Soil Conservation Month, BSWM personnel led by Tejada conducted a tree planting activity at Mt. Balagbag, Barangay San Isidro, San Jose del Monte-Macabod, Rodriguez, Rizal.

“One of the most effective ways to fight desertification is to plant trees, and more people should do their part in this endeavour,” Tejada said.

BSWM’s pronouncement to widen its tree planting activity nationwide and make it a year-long program shows tree planting has become an indispensible element in rejuvenating the environment, and demonstrates the agency’s vital role in soil and water conservation to achieve food security.

To ensure success in this continuing program, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala thru a memorandum instructed all head attached agencies and field offices of the DA to undertake relevant activities that will support this year’s theme “Enrich our Forests and Conserve Our Soils,” which coincides with the declaration of the year 2011 as the “National Year Of the Forests”.

“Breathing is basic in life. In breathing, we need oxygen and the oxygen comes from the trees. Without the trees, there would be no life on this planet, “Tejada said. -30- Veron Hernandez
