QC TO EMPLOY DISPLACED TRIKE DRIVERS

Colorum tricycle drivers in Quezon City need not worry about losing their only source of income.

The Quezon City government is set to hire displaced colorum tricycle drivers as city workers for the fabrication of thousands of school desks and chairs for the city’s public schools.

At present, the QC government still has a shortage in classroom desks and chairs in 96 public elementary and 46 high schools.

But the shortage, QC Mayor Herbert M. Bautista said during a regular executive meeting will lessen in the next few months after the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) donated to the city government 6,000 board feet of confiscated woods for the making of school desks and chairs.

The QC department of public order and safety (DPOS) headed by former QC Police District director Elmo San Diego had already apprehended a total of 377 colorum tricycle units in different areas in QC in November alone.

Based on DPOS data, there are about 5,000 colorum tricycle units plying QC roads, which San Diego vowed to apprehend for violation of an ordinance that declared a moratorium on the issuance of tricycle franchise.

The mayor said that hiring of colorum tricycle drivers as makers of school desks and chairs will solve their unemployment problem. -30- Maureen Quinones, PAISO
