IT’S MIGRANTS DAY IN QC

In a move to further assist Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and their families, the   Quezon City government will hold today (June 24) the First Quezon City OFW General Assembly in celebration of the 2011 Migrants Day.

QC Mayor Herbert M. Bautista will lead city hall officials in welcoming OFWs and their families including those who came home from Libya and other Middle East countries in a simple ceremony at the QC Hall Plaza from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

The event will also be participated in by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), TESDA and different offices in QC Hall like Scholarship and Youth Development Program (SYDP), Social Services Development Department (SSDD) and City Health Department.

Participating local and overseas companies will be offering job placements for OFWs.

QC Public Employment Service Office chief Carlo Magno Abella said that the First QC OFW General Assembly aims to complete the list of QC- based OFWs, build camaraderie among them, offer job placements and livelihood assistance and other forms of help that the city government could provide.

Earlier, the QC government, on orders of Mayor Bautista, gave financial relief assistance amounting to P5,000 for each OFW who have been displaced by the escalating tension in Libya .

QC government set aside P1 million to facilitate the grant of the financial support, which was provided by the city on top of the P10,000 cash aid given to Filipino returnees from Libya by the national government through OWWA. -30- Maureen Quinones, PAISO
