Clearing of illegal fishcages in Taal Lake

Clearing of illegal fishcages in Taal Lake. Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 4A CALABARZON Regional Executive Director Nilo B. Tamoria (right) and Department of Agriculture -Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) Director Asis Perez (left) supervise the dismantling of some 77 illegal fishcages in the municipalities of Talisay—28 fishcages, Laurel—11, San Nicolas—8 and Agoncillo—30 on Tuesday. Tamoria said the dismantling is not just due to the recent fishkill but a continuing effort of the Taal Volcano Protected Landscape’s Protected Area Management Board to immediately clear the lake of illegal fishcages, and reduce the number to the agreed number as the ‘carrying capacity’ of a total of 6,000 fishcages distributed among the municipalities around the lake. Left photo shows a fishcage which was towed nearshore and dismantled.  (Thru: Estrella Z. Gallardo, PSciJourn MegaManila, 6.15.11)
