QC SUPPORTS SENATE MOVE FOR BARANGAY ACCESS TO INTERNET

The Quezon City Council has approved a resolution urging the Senate and the House of Representatives to enact a law that will provide internet access for research to strategic barangays in all regions of the country.

Resolution No. Sp-5054, S-2010 pushes for the enactment of a bill, reportedly pending before the Senate that seeks to build and establish internet access for research in strategic barangays throughout the country.

Quezon City 3rd District Councilors Gian Carlo Sotto and Eufemio Lagumbay, the main authors of the resolution, said educational materials for pre-school to post-doctoral levels are available from website and these can be made accessible for students and researchers nationwide.

Sotto and Lagumbay are optimistic that internet access in strategic barangays will somehow address the backlog of public libraries particularly in the depressed areas where students and researchers have no available references and reading materials for their studies.

If the said pending Senate measure is enacted, public school children in key barangays of the country will enjoy easy access to the internet and such access will greatly compliment the program of the Department of Education to upgrade and improve the delivery of quality education, according to the two councilors.

Recently, Mayor Hebert Bautista made available for distribution some 26 flat screen computer units to all QC libraries in the city’s barangays to accommodate the increasing number of internet users in the city’s 21 branch libraries that serve more than 12,000 student researchers, mostly from public schools who have limited access to internet.

The Quezon City Government is providing free internet access to all public school students and researchers who visit the city’s public library and its branches in the city’s barangays. -30- Rico/ Maureen Quinones, PAISO
