QC IMPLEMENTS SUMMER KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM

Almost   10,000   are now enrolled   in   Quezon   City   public elementary   schools for the 8-week kindergarten summer class program.

The  QC  summer  kindergarten  program  is  in  compliance  with  a   Department of  Education order for the conduct of  summer classes for 5-year old children  who will be enrolled in Grade I this coming June.

Quezon City Division of City Schools Superintendent Dr. Corazon C. Rubio reported to Mayor Herbert M. Bautista that the Commonwealth Elementary School in District 2 had registered about 500 kindergarten enrollees, the biggest number among the city’s summer kids in public schools.

Rubio said that the kindergarten program is in line with the new curriculum called K12 that the Aquino administration will implement by stages in the country’s educational system in the coming years.

Based on K12 curriculum, 5 years old children should be enrolled in kindergarten course before they are accepted in Grade 1 in private and public schools in the country. This is the first step for the implementation of the K12 curriculum this year while the next step will be in 2012 when the new curriculum for Grade 1 and High School will be formally introduced.

The summer kindergarten program,  which   started last April 11 and ends in June 3, is  intended to ensure that  all Grade 1 enrollees this coming school  year have developed the necessary learning experiences to prepare them for academic work.

K12 educational curriculum means that after one year in kindergarten, children have to complete 6 years in grade school  plus 4 years junior high school and 2 years senior high school.

Rubio said the program will bolster the ability of children to cope up with the world challenges brought by fast phase of modern technology and prepare them for college years. -30- Maureen Quinones, PAISO
