DOST Davao Promotes Smart Farming for Sustainability

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Davao is transforming the region’s agricultural landscape, moving it away from traditional guesswork and into an era of data-driven, intelligent farming.

Through a recent showcase by the Southern Mindanao Agriculture, Aquatic and Resources Research and Development Consortium (SMAARRDEC), DOST-11 introduced local farmers to a suite of cutting-edge technologies designed to increase yields, reduce costs, and minimize environmental impact.

“The farms of the future are no longer built on guesswork; they are powered by Science, Technology, and Innovation,” said DOST Davao Regional Director Anthony C. Sales. “These technologies are proof that Science and Innovation are not abstract concepts but real, practical tools that can transform the way our farmers work.”

The featured innovations demonstrate a practical approach to modern agricultural challenges:

Zappify: This Internet of Things (IoT) device automates pest control by using sensors to detect pest activity and activating control mechanisms only when necessary. This targeted approach significantly reduces the reliance on chemical pesticides, lowering operational costs for farmers and protecting the environment.

Multispectral Imaging: By capturing light wavelengths invisible to the human eye, this technology provides detailed data on crop health, soil conditions, and water stress. Farmers can use these insights to make precise decisions on irrigation and fertilization, optimizing resource use and boosting productivity.

INDAI (INspection of Durian using AI): Directly benefiting one of Davao’s most iconic industries, INDAI uses artificial intelligence and non-invasive imaging to assess the quality of durian fruits without damaging them. This ensures consistent quality, helps growers meet export standards, reduces waste, and increases profitability.

Director Sales emphasized the broader impact of these technologies, stating, “By empowering our agriculture sector with smart technologies, we are securing not only better harvests but also a more sustainable and competitive future for Mindanao.”

The initiative underscores DOST Davao’s commitment to bridging the gap between laboratory research and real-world application. As farmers face mounting pressures from climate change and market demands, these smart farming solutions offer a pathway to resilience and growth, ensuring scientific advancements make a tangible difference in the fields and communities of Mindanao.

These smart farming technologies are part of the wider initiatives of the DOST under its strategic pillars of human well-being, wealth creation, wealth protection, and sustainability.
