Practical Wellness Reset for Sustainable Health

As the new year approaches, a leading nutrition expert advises a radical shift in wellness planning: choose wisely, not wildly. In a landscape saturated with extreme routines and trendy supplements, Dr. Vipada Sae-Lao, Nutrition Education and Training Lead for Herbalife Asia-Pacific, champions a personalized, sustainable approach to health that prioritizes prevention and listening to one’s own body over rigid, one-size-fits-all mandates.

The call for a practical reset is underscored by data. The recent Herbalife Asia-Pacific Responsible Supplementation Survey found 92% of respondents identify preventive health as a top priority. Meanwhile, a Social Weather Stations survey reveals 34% of Filipino adults experience daily stress frequently, and a 2023 National Nutrition Survey highlights widespread dietary gaps in calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C across age groups.

Dr. Sae-Lao’s blueprint for a sustainable 2026 wellness reset focuses on four foundational pillars:

1. Embrace a Preventive Lifestyle: Invest in consistent, science-backed habits rather than dramatic overhauls. This means building a daily routine around a nutrient-rich diet, enjoyable movement, restorative sleep, adequate hydration, and proactive stress regulation. “Prevention is giving your future self the healthiest possible head start,” Dr. Sae-Lao notes.

2. Tune Into Your Body’s Wisdom: Structure your diet and exercise around your unique metabolism, lifestyle, and cultural preferences—not the latest trend. Meals should combine lean protein, healthy carbs, good fats, and fiber. Exercise should energize, not drain. This is crucial in a country where the WHO reported 93.4% of Filipino adolescents as physically inactive.

3. Use Supplementation Strategically: View supplements as a way to fill specific nutritional gaps, not as magic bullets. With 80% in the region taking supplements daily but many unsure of their choices, consulting a health professional for personalized, science-backed recommendations is key.

4. Prioritize Stress Management and Connection: Unmanaged stress critically impacts immunity, gut health, and metabolism. Incorporate simple practices like meditation, scheduled breaks, and sleep routines. Following the example of the world’s “Blue Zones,” cultivating strong personal relationships and community networks is a powerful buffer against stress and a pillar of long-term happiness.

Leverage Everyday Technology: Use accessible apps and devices to track steps, sleep, nutrition, and hydration. These tools provide clarity and gentle nudges, making sustainable health monitoring seamless within a busy life.

Dr. Sae-Lao concludes, “This year, let’s keep the path to long-term health straightforward. Focus on the fundamentals, stick to routines that fit your lifestyle, and get regular check-ups. Change doesn’t have to be as loud as firecrackers at midnight. The new year is about attracting not just prosperity, but also good health.”
